Jagdish Temple

Jagdish Temple is one of the largest and most famous Hindu temples in Udaipur. Located in the City Palace complex, this ancient Indo-Aryan-style structure was built by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1651 and serves as a fascinating example of Indian architecture from that time.

Upon approaching the three-story temple, you'll be greeted by two giant elephant statues. The main shrine can be reached by following a flight of steep marble steps that lead to a brass image of Garuda, a half-man, half-eagle deity. This huge idol stands facing the main temple structure, as if guarding the doorway to Lord Vishnu's shrine. Surrounded by four smaller shrines, the striking image of Lord Vishnu as Jagannath was carved from a single piece of black stone. Be sure to also stop and inspect the beautifully carved images of Vishnu on the structure's bell roof and the 100 pillars depicting various scenes around the temple.

Jagdish Temple is situated near Udaipur City Palace, making it convenient to combine visits to the two attractions on a private half-day tour. Those looking to get the most out of their time in Udaipur can consider a full-day tour of the city to take in its most famous and revered sights.
