Meet your guide at 8:30am at Unirii Square. Walk around this central square, one of the creations of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. Your guide will explain how this area is a testimony of his ambition to completely change the capital in a way that fitted his idea of a 'new city.' Next, visit two of the eight churches that were miraculously saved and moved 1,000 feet (300 meters) from their original place. They were hidden behind tall blocks, this being their only way of survival.

Next up, head to the Palace of the Parliament, locally known as the ‘House of the People.' This is no doubt the most famous landmark from Romania’s communist period and the second largest administrative building in the world. Part of Ceausescu’s vision for creating his own version of the capital, the construction is truly monumental with more than 1,000 rooms. It's full of details, like hand-made decorations from the finest and most expensive materials, including 1 million cubic meters of marble and 3.5 tonnes of crystal.

Continue on to the old city center, home to some of the oldest monuments in the capital. Its lively streets are packed with hundreds of bars and clubs and is arguably the most vibrant part of the city — a must of any history tour. Discover the unique architecture and history of its streets while observing key historical landmarks like the former Palace of the Post, the National Bank of Romania, the Macca-Villacrosse passage, and centuries old churches and inns. Break for lunch in one of the charming restaurants.

After lunch, visit the Old Court that was for centuries the political center of Bucharest. The best known medieval prince connected to the Old Court is Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for the character Dracula. Continue on to University Square, one of the most beautiful in the city, and admire the Russian Church, the University and Coltea Church. Make your way to the 21st of December Square, a key place for the collective memory of Bucharest. This square is deeply linked to the violent events of December 1989 and the early 90's, when groups of people occupied the square on December 21 to protest against the communist regime, they were arrested, beaten or shot in the evening of the same day.

Lastly, explore Victoriei Avenue, the 2.7-kilometer avenue that stretches from the United Nations Square to the Victoriei Square. This is the best example of the most glorious period of Bucharest. Its main attractions include the CEC Palace, the Military Club, the Atheneum, the Palace Cantacuzino or the Revolution Square where Nicolae Ceausescu held his last speech in December 1989.

The tour ends at around 4:30pm in Victoriei Square. If you prefer, you can request to have the start and end point for your walking tour be at your hotel. Price listed is per person, for a group of 5 - 10 people. See 'Important Info' tab for more details on pricing.
