After pickup from your Guangzhou hotel, you’re driven to the airport to catch your morning flight to Xi’an. Upon landing at the Xi’an airport, meet your friendly guide, who takes you directly to see the UNESCO-listed terracotta warriors.
Take a private tour of Emperor Qin’s Mausoleum, built to honor the first ruler of a unified China, Qin Shihuang. It’s now an underground museum. See the impressive, life-size collection of terracotta sculptures dating back to the 3rd century BC. Learn how some 8,000 soldiers, 130 bronze chariots and nearly 700 horses were buried with China’s first emperor to protect him in the afterlife.
Once you’ve viewed one of China’s most celebrated archeological finds, enjoy a delicious lunch and continue on to the terracotta warriors factory, where you can see how the funerary art was created and carved with incredible detail.
Afterward, drive to the Xi’an City Wall for a stroll along its walkway with your guide, or opt for a bike ride alongside it instead. Built in the 14th century by Ming Dynasty rulers, the ancient wall forms a rectangle around the entire city. Walk up the steps until you reach the top and view the city from above, or look up at the complex of gates, battlements and watchtowers as you bicycle by.
Then take a short walk from the South Gate to the Bell Tower. Located along the wall next to the old Muslim Quarter, it houses several large, bronze-cast 14th-century bells. Experience the bustling street culture of the Muslim Quarter in the evening, buzzing with interesting souvenir shops and food stalls.
Finally, stop by a local restaurant chosen by your guide to enjoy a dinner of Muslim specialties before checking in to your hotel for the night.
Overnight: 5-Star Empark Grand Hotel Xi'an with buffet breakfast
Day 2: Xi’an – Beijing (B, L, D)
In the morning, you’re transferred after breakfast to the Xi’an airport for your flight to Beijing. Upon landing, meet your local guide and driver, who are waiting for you.
The first stop on your private Beijing tour is the Great Wall of China at Mutianyu, a towering granite wall extending 7,382 feet (2,250 meters) that was built during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) as a military alternative to the Great Wall at Badaling. Much steeper than the Badaling section, the Mutianyu Great Wall offers a more challenging climb to the top, which features outer and inner parapets and grand watchtowers.
Scale more than 1,400 steps, or opt for the cable car ride to the top, where you’ll have unrivaled views of the Great Wall stretching into the distance. Learn from your knowledgeable guide about this segment of China’s monumental walkway, which hasn’t been fully restored to its authentic state. Explore the ancient engineering marvel with few others in sight on an easy walk with plenty of rest stops along the way.
After your descent, pay a visit to a famous local jade factory to see how jade is carved, and have lunch nearby. During the drive to Beijing city, take in the scenic sights and a stop to enjoy a Chinese tea ceremony along the way.
In the evening, you’re served a delicious Peking roast duck dinner, then driven to your hotel to check in for the night.
Overnight: Dongfang Hotel in Beijing
Day 3: Beijing (B)
After a hotel breakfast in the morning, tour the world-famous Tiananmen Square with your guide to learn about China’s more recent history. As you walk through the square, see notable landmarks such as Tiananmen Tower, the Monument to the People’s Heroes, the Great Hall of the People and the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, and listen to stories about the Cultural Revolution of Chairman Mao Zedong.
Continue on foot to the legendary Forbidden City, a UNESCO World Heritage site that served as a Chinese imperial palace and political center of the Chinese government for nearly 500 years. Explore the four palatial halls of the Imperial Palace Museum, where you will see an extensive collection of artwork and artifacts from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Your guide can make suggestions for lunch (own expense) and take you to a restaurant of your choice.
In the afternoon, your guide drives you to the UNESCO-listed Temple of Heaven, China’s largest complex of ancient sacrificial buildings, also erected during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Learn about the temple’s influence on the region’s architecture as you stroll through.
The tour concludes in Beijing. Let your guide and driver know where else you’d like to go in the city before you’re dropped off at your next hotel or Beijing Capital International Airport.
