Day 1: Penang
After pickup in Penang, you’re transferred to your hotel for check-in, and then the afternoon is free to spend at your leisure. In the evening, join your guide to explore the streets of Georgetown on a slow ride by trishaw, which takes you past historical buildings of the colonial era. Learn about Penang’s rich architectural heritage as you coast past UNESCO-listed landmarks all the way to Little India.
Enjoy a stroll through Little India, a bustling enclave teeming with shops selling traditional wares, saris and handicrafts. Then proceed by coach to a hawker center where you can buy famous Penang dishes like satay (skewered and grilled meat served with sauce) and char koay teow (a stir-fried noodle dish) for dinner.

Day 2: Penang (B, L, D)
After breakfast at your hotel, head out in the morning to a wet market and take in the heady scent of fresh herbs and cooking spices like curry leaf, coriander and tamarind before your cooking class begins.
Upon arrival at the Tropical Spice Garden Cooking School, settle in at your custom-built workstation, tucked away in a secluded corner of the gardens, surrounded by jungle, where you can catch a glimpse of the Andaman Sea. An experienced chef introduces you to Malay, Indian or Peranakan (also called Nyonya) cuisine — a combination of Chinese, Malay and other influences that create a unique blend of tangy and spicy flavors.
Under the guidance of your professional instructor, learn to concoct refreshing beverages and cook local favorites from scratch, such as nasi lemak (a coconut milk–based rice dish), assam laksa (a fish-based soup) and tandoori chicken.

Engulfed in a cloud of fragrant aromas, enjoy the fruits of your labor as lunch is served on the Pavilion. After your meal, relax over an activity-free afternoon before you meet up with the group for dinner at a restaurant featuring the best of authentic Penang Peranakan cuisine.

Day 3: Penang (B)
After your morning breakfast, set off on a Georgetown sightseeing tour of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Your guide takes you on a drive through Penang’s historical downtown, featuring prominent landmarks of interest.
Your first stop is in Chinatown at Khoo Kongsi, a magnificent clan house surrounded by terrace houses and shops. Once part of a network of Chinese clan associations established during the mid-19th century in Malaysia, the traditional building showcases intricate woodwork of master craftsmen.
After learning about this architectural heritage from your guide, head to Pinang Peranakan Mansion, built at the end of the 19th century. Following decades of neglect, the stately home was restored to its former glory and now incorporates an eclectic style of Chinese wood-carved panels, English floor tiles and Scottish ironworks. As you tour the opulent heritage home with more than 1,000 antiques on display, hear about the lifestyle and customs of the Peranakans, a prominent community also known as Straits Chinese.
Next up is Fort Corwallis, established by the English East India Company after the 1786 arrival of Captain Francis Light. Follow your guide on foot around the fort’s perimeter of 10-foot-high (3-meter) walls and head inside for a look at the century-old chapel, prison cells, munitions storage, bronze canons and flagstaff.
At the end of your tour, you can enjoy various street arts and further indulge in street food unique to Penang (own expense). Perhaps try curry mee (thin noodles in curry broth) or bite into delicious desserts like ice kachang (shaved ice that includes jelly, red beans and sweet corn).
Your afternoon and evening are free to spend as you wish. Select your own choice of cuisine for dinner, perhaps trying Mamak (Indian Muslim), Hainan/Hakka (Chinese), Malay or international dishes (own expense).
