Day 1: Vientiane
You will be met upon arrival at Vientiane Wattay International Airport and transferred to your hotel. Once you’ve settled in and eaten lunch (own expense), set out on a small-group sightseeing tour of the fascinating Laos capital with your guide in the afternoon.

Stroll alongside the mighty Mekong River past faded French colonial mansions and tree-lined boulevards in the older part of Vientiane, and experience the city’s outstanding Buddhist temples. Admire nearly 7,000 Buddha images at Wat Si Saket, situated in a tranquil spot near the city center. Built in 1818, it’s the oldest temple still standing in Vientiane and features an ornate five-tiered roof.

Next, visit Wat Haw Phra Kaew, the former royal temple of the Lao monarchy that housed the Emerald Buddha before it was taken to Bangkok’s Grand Palace. Walk through the lush temple grounds to the indoor gallery that showcases 18th-century bronze Buddha statues. Ask your guide about the Buddhist devotees who wrap fabric around the statues and affix gold foil to the faces. Learn more about the importance of Buddhism in Lao culture at Pha That Luang (Great Sacred Stupa), considered a symbol of Lao sovereignty and the most important national monument.

Spend your evening at your leisure; relax with a Lao foot massage at a nearby spa or head to one of the restaurants within easy walking distance of your hotel.

Overnight: Khampiane Hotel in Vientiane

Day 2: Vientiane – Luang Prabang (B)
Start your day with breakfast at your hotel, followed by an independent trip to Vientiane's vibrant and colorful morning market before you’re transferred to the airport for your afternoon flight to Luang Prabang. Upon arrival, you are met and transferred to your hotel.

Nestled in the hills of northern Laos, the tranquil city of Luang Prabang — designated a UNESCO World Heritage site — is studded with dozens of ornate temples and brimming with colorful markets and French colonial architecture. Settle in with a meal at your hotel restaurant and enjoy a drink at the onsite bar (own expense), or ask your guide for recommendations on the varied cuisine on offer around town.

In the late afternoon, embark on a small-group tour with your guide for a historical glimpse of the former cradle of the Lao Kingdom (Lan Xang). Begin with a visit to the Royal Palace Museum, built with an eclectic blend of Lao and French beaux-arts architecture in 1904. Inside, you'll find the royal family quarters, left untouched since they vacated the palace in 1975. Peruse a collection of rare Buddha images made from crystal and gold, as well as articles of royal regalia including the king's own elephant saddle.

Across the street a hill called Mt Phousi, topped by a glittering golden stupa, dominates Luang Prabang's skyline. Climb the 328 zigzag steps up to the sacred gilded stupa and big drum of Phousi Temple, and be rewarded with a panoramic view of Luang Prabang and its surroundings at sunset.

Overnight: Phousi Hotel or Ancient Luang Prabang Hotel in Luang Prabang

Day 3: Pak Ou Caves (B, L)
Following breakfast, travel by boat to the Pak Ou caves, located approximately 15 miles (25 km) up the Mekong River. En route to the sacred limestone caverns filled with hundreds of Buddha statues in myriad styles and sizes, your guide takes your small group to the village of Ban Xang Hai, where local residents fill jars with fiery lao lao (rice whisky) — sometimes with a snake or scorpion inside!

When you reach the Pak Ou caves, climb up about 250 steps for great views of the Mekong. Perched high above the river, the pilgrimage site features more than 3,000 Buddha statues brought by devoted pilgrims. Visit Tham Ting (lower cave) and Tham Theung (upper cave), which is deeper and requires a flashlight for viewing. Listen to your guide describe the importance of Pak Ou as you peer at the images, most of which have remained largely undisturbed over decades.

Enjoy a picnic lunch before returning to Luang Prabang, stopping at the silk-weaving village of Ban Phanom on the way. You’ll have the opportunity to purchase colorful textiles or simply observe life along the scenic river before your journey ends.

If you’d like, cap off a great day with a classic Lao cocktail on the veranda of the colonial-style Villa Santi Hotel (own expense).

Overnight: Phousi Hotel or Ancient Luang Prabang Hotel in Luang Prabang

Day 4: Luang Prabang (B)
Luang Prabang is easily explored by foot and today is free for you to take a closer look at some of the beautiful temples, try one of the many restaurants along the banks of the Mekong River or simply soak up the enchanting atmosphere of the town steeped in old-world charm.

In the early morning, lines of saffron-robed Buddhist monks walk the narrow streets and lanes to receive alms from the faithful — it's well worth arising at dawn to watch. Stroll the shoreline of the river or explore temples such as Wat Xieng Thong, perhaps Luang Prabang's most magnificent; inside, you'll find monks eager to practice their English with you.

Escape the afternoon heat with a visit to the stunning Kuang Si Falls, located 19 miles (32 km) south of town. It’s easy to hire a tuk tuk taxi and swim in the cool turquoise pools at the base of the falls or take to the nearby walking trails. Alternatively, relieve aching muscles with a Lao foot or body massage at one of the numerous spas within walking distance of your accommodation.

Overnight: Phousi Hotel or Ancient Luang Prabang Hotel in Luang Prabang

Day 5: Luang Prabang (B)
After breakfast, your time is free until you're transferred to Luang Prabang International Airport for your departing flight. (Please note that hotel checkout time is normally at noon.)
