Itinerário:
Day 1: Windhoek/Swakopmund — Namib Desert (D)
After hotel pickup from Windhoek in the afternoon, travel south toward Namib Desert along the renowned Spreetshoogte Pass. During this journey on gravel roads, enjoy views of the Khomas Hochland peaks, referred to as 'the Place God Created in Anger', and at the top of the mountain pass, marvel at the panoramic views of the red, yellow and orange hues of the desert before inching down a sharp descent with hairpin turns.

Alternatively, from hotel pickup in Swakopmund, enjoy views of Kuiseb Canyon on your way to the lodging, your base for the next two nights. The canyon gained considerable attention after the publication of geologist Henno Martin’s memoir The Sheltering Desert, which recounts his tale of survival in the rocky gorge and cliffs with a friend during World War II to avoid imprisonment in an internment camp.

Take a break from the road at Solitaire, a quirky frontier-like settlement near Namib-Naukluft National Park, dotted with rusting relics of Fords and other cars among cactuses. Here, perhaps pick up apple crumble from the bakery or other snacks from the general store (own expense) and note the amount of the latest rainfall scribbled on a blackboard.

Arrive at your lodging, located near Namib Desert, and end your day with a hearty dinner.

Overnight: Namib Naukluft Lodge or Soft Adventure Camp, or similar lodging

Day 2: Tsauchab River Valley — Sossusvlei — Deadvlei — Sesriem Canyon (B, L, D)
Leave your lodge before dawn and enter the park through Sesriem gate at sunrise. Drive through Tsauchab River Valley and marvel as the dawn light strikes the nearby dunes, trees and desert, casting an ethereal glow over the stark but beautiful landscape.

At the end of Tsauchab River Valley, reach the Sossusvlei pan. Normally hard and dry, the salt and clay pan becomes viscous when the Tsauchab River's waters feed the pan every five to ten years.

Feel the talcum-soft sand on your legs as you climb Dune 45, 279 feet (85 meters) high, and at the top, delight in the panoramic view of Dune Valley. Earn bragging rights and ascend the highest dune in Sossusvlei, 'Big Daddy' at 1,066 feet tall (325 meters). Feel as though you’ve stepped into a Salvador Dali painting as you look out over the pan, taking in sweeping views of rust-colored dunes, dead black trees and the flawless azure sky.

Depending on your preference, enjoy a casual 30- to 45-minute hike or take a short drive to Deadvlei, located about 1.2 miles (2 km) from Sossusvlei. Afrikaans called it the ‘dead marsh’ as Deadvlei’s access to the river was blocked off some 900 years ago by the surrounding dunes. As you soak up the amazing views of this spectral grove of charred trees, look out for clumps of greenery, Salsola shrubs and the thorny Nara melon, which survive off the moisture from the morning mists.

Stop for breakfast and then visit Sesriem Canyon, layers of sedimentary rock formed by the Tsauchab River over millions of years and one of the few places that has water year-round. In Afrikaans, the canyon’s name means ‘six leather straps’, based on the fact that the early explorers of this area had to tie together six straps to create a length long enough to collect buckets of water from below.

After Sesriem Canyon, return to your lodge for lunch. Relax for the afternoon and observe springbok and oryx antelope on the open plains.

Later, take the optional guided drive to the nearby Marble Mountains (own expense). Sit atop the large chunks of white or pale pink marble and sip a drink as you watch the sun set, draping the desert around you in an array of colors.

End your night with dinner at your lodge before sinking into your bed for a comfortable night’s rest.

Overnight: Namib Naukluft Lodge or Soft Adventure Camp, or similar lodging

Day 3: Namib Desert — Windhoek/Swakopmund (B)
After savoring breakfast at your lodge, pack your things and return to Windhoek via the less steep Remhoogte Pass, or through the Kuiseb Pass to Swakopmund, arriving at your departure point in the early afternoon.
