Ana was a very good guide and we had a fun albeit long! day. Since Guimaraes has only the castle to visit, my suggestion would be to shorten the time spent there so as to have more time in Braga, where there is lots to see!
This trip beat all expectations. The Rick Steves guidebook doesn't cover anything north of Porto, and it misses two gem cities that this tour covers. Braga has the incredible steps that should not be missed, and Guimarães is packed with more than anyone would expect. We were looking for something a bit different already been to Douro valley and Coimbra, and this was a great day trip from Porto. Great guide, good company on the tour 8 of us in the minivan from three different countries, not including the guide, and a great day.
Paola was a fantastic guide. I have taken tours all over the world, and she is one of the most knowledgeable guides that I have encountered. I was lucky enough to take this tour on my first day in Portugal, and her detailed history of northern Portugal and how it was relevant to each stop actually made my entire trip better by giving me a unique historical perspective of the region and the country. Braga and Guimaraes are two excellent stops, and I often see it recommended that a day in each is better, but I felt like the time at each location was perfect.
Loved the Guimaraes and Braga Day Trip from Porto. To see the Guimaraes Castle from the 10th century. Stairs and a walkway have been installed so you can walk around the inside wall of the castle which gives you a great view of the surrounds. It gives you a perspective of what it would have been like for people inside looking to defend the monastory from attacks. The Samerio Sanctuary is beautiful and overlooks the surrounds of the city of Braga. Plus the grand old Braga Cathedral. Lunch was at a great restuarent where we had green wine, fish, and pork, with roast vegetables. Plus the Good Jesus of the Mount, outside of the city of Braga. A pilgrimage site with a monumental, Baroque staircase that climbs 116 metres with beautiful gardens. Plus the funicular that uses water and steam as a weight and pulley system to pull the trolley cars up and down the hill.
