Picking up other people took forever. Dropping them off took forever. FOR-E-VER. The bus was LATE almost half an hour to begin with. Then you're on the bus for hours because of all of that above. They drop you off at the bus station at Gibraltar, give you vague directions and let you go for two hours. The shopping there is disappointing, unless you want perfume or alcohol. Then the tour begins, which was a complete joke. They told people to be there at 12.30 but LEFT the area at 12.25 without checking headcount. A lady came running after us yelling at the bus because she showed up on time and we were gone. They didn't get any Italians this time around but got too many English speaking people and it took them solid 20 minutes to figure out what to do. When we finally got to our adapted tour bus, we got a guide who was a very disgruntled UK guy, who barely said anything during the entire tour, rolled his eyes at people and was very abrasive. He drove like crazy, he almost hit two other vehicles who HAD the right of way we were in the front so we saw everything. Caves? You have 20 minutes. 20 minutes to get in, see the caves, hike to the bathroom, see the monkeys and get back on the bus. Riiiight. Next spot! You have 10 minutes! We regretted paying for this terrible experience the moment we got on that mini tour bus with the disgruntled guide. He did tons of driving but barely said anything about the place, and what he did say was very disjointed. Just awful! And we left Gibraltar at 2.30pm... Why so early and rushed? Just a terrible tour. Extremely disappointed.
Gibraltar tour was very good but in addition to the people that boarded the bus in central Malaga it made various pick ups along the way making a 2 hour journey much longer. They should have one bus for central Malaga and another for the hotels along the way to Gibraltar.
Now the good: 1 On time pickup with a modern clean bus pickup is at 7am, buy something for breakfast the night before because in Spain everything is closed at that early time and you would not have a chance to eat until you arrive alt Gibraltar at approx. 10:45 am
2 The tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable 3 Adequate time to see and shop in downtown. 4 adequate time to take pictures of the beautiful views and the monkeys.
This tour is an easy way to go and see Gibraltar from Malaga!
If you start this trip from Malaga, you will spend about 2 hours each way on a bus as you pick up other folks at hotels along the way. The Marbella passengers were lucky...last pickup, first drop off. Time in Gibraltar is short, but you have time to walk down Main Street have lunch, drink, etc. The bus tour of the rock and cave was fast...but we had a awesome bus driver that made it interesting. Worth the time as an intro to Gibraltar to see if you want to go back and see more.
Gibraltar was beautiful and the staff was kind, BUT I felt mislead just before we arrived. When I purchased the tickets online weeks before the trip, I was under the impression that our tickets would take us all around the island, including up the mountain where most of the attractions are located. Minutes before arriving, we were told that I needed to purchase two additional tickets with cash to board a smaller bus that would actually tour the island for 50 Euros (25 per ticket). I don't like carrying a lot of cash during our travels, lucky for us I brought a 50 Euro bill with me that day. If I didn't bring cash with me, our trip would have been limited to the small town near the bus depot. The town is quite charming. But still I was extremely upset that I traveled to Gibraltar and almost missed out seeing the highlights; monkeys, St. Michael's Cave and the distant Africa outline on the southern side. Finally, my last huge complaint is that I was told to meet the tour in Malaga at 7 am. The reason that I was given was that the bus would not pick us up at our hotel which was a few towns west of Malaga, but east of Gibraltar (somewhere in the middle). This was no issue at first as we rented a car for our trip. We drove the Malaga, spend an additional 30 Euros to park and boarded the bus. Minutes into the trip, the bus started making stops picking up additional tourists. There were between 10 to 15 stops. This didn't bother me until we made a stop in the town that I was staying at, which was about two hours in! WHY, WHY, WHY was I told to travel to Malaga, when I could have met the bus at this other hotel? So not only did I have to spend an additional 80 Euros, we wasted at least six hours of our day because we were told to meet the tour at the first stop. Again, it pains me to write this complaint because both bus drivers and the tour guide were extremely nice. And Gibraltar is extremely beautiful and would recommend anyone to visit, just not on this tour. I've been on many site seeing tours throughout Europe, this was our worse.
Gibraltar - interesting yet odd. The monkeys were great to see in person. St. Michael's Cave was magnificent. The town/main shopping area itself was OK. Cute but nothing special. I felt the tour was rushed and would have liked at least one more hour to be on my own to explore. The tour guide Paco was really quite good - speaking 5 languages. He was knowledgeable and funny.
