It is hard for me to review of this tour. On the one hand the archaeological site of Troy is amazing and the guide did a good job of showing us around while we were there. Seeing Troy was fantastic, but the tour was a disaster in many respects. Things were done by two different tour companies and there was a switch of the van. I don't know what was the fault of which tour company. But I cannot recommend either. One was Fez tours the other was Crowded House. First, we were told that we would be picked up between 6:15 am and 6:30 am, but the bus did not come to get us until 7:15. They didn't check the tour or ask us the name. After picking other people up we drove out of town. There was no itinerary given or anything. After about two and a half hours we stopped at a gas station for breakfast. The breakfast was bread, hard boiled eggs, cheese, olives, tomato, and cucumber, none of it particularly good. I was able to buy a börek, which was heated up in a microwave. We were able to buy snacks at the gas station. We the drove another two hours and stopped in Eceabat for lunch. Lunch was supposed to be seafood, but was soup, chicken, rice, and beef. Now, here is where it went from bad to awful. My wife has food allergies. In general people have been very good in Turkey at restaurants. Here they weren't careful at all and made her sick. The food allergy did not hit until the ride home. As I said, the actual tour of Troy was very good. The guide was good and Troy is amazing. But the ride home was awful for her because she was ill. Additionally, the place where we stopped for dinner had no food options for her. The guide did not even try to translate for her to be able to try and order something. So all in all, Troy is amazing, but this was a terrible tour. I don't blame them for the distance. Troy is far from Istanbul. There is no getting around that. But telling the wrong time, bad food worst meals we had in Turkey, and then not taking care of her allergy made it horrible
I personally DO NOT recommend this tour to anyone! I know it sounds amazing to visit Troy, but imagine sitting in a van small bus 16 hours if you're lucky and the traffic is good! That is 8 hours there and 8 hours back to Istanbul. When you get there, there is nothing much in Troy! It's just rubbles and piles of stones and dirt! You need to Imagine the glorious city that once was! I would urge Viator to take off this tour as we don't need to waste our time on the road during our holidays. I wasted one day! :
A wonderful tour but they switched me to another tour company to go back and they would not help me get to the place I was staying even though we arrived back in Istanbul at 11:00 PM. The tour guide idd to me and told me that he had checked for the address of the police training center where I was staying but he had not. he dropped me off far away from the center and the taxi driver did not know where it was. I could not direct him. I was able to tell him to go to a hotel near the center and get directions but this took a long time and made me very nervous at almost midnight alone in Istanbul. The tour guide should not have told me that he knew where the center was and that he had check ed with his manager when he had not. I don't think that it is a good idea to leave a woman zone in a big city at 11:30 at night far away from her hotel without knowing where it even is.
We really enjoyed this trip. However, it is a LONG DAY. At least ive hours drive there, then a short stay at the site, then five hours back. Or much more, depending on traffic in Istanbul the trip says you are back by 10 pm or so, but realistically, some groups in the days prior did not get back until 2:00 am! We were back by 11:30 pm. My husband and I are history buffs so this tour was like a dream come true. I will say this you have to REALLY like history for this tour to be worth it to you. There is not much to see, as the ruins don't cover a large area and they are not particularly well preserved by time. But my god, the history of the place!!! If you want to learn about Troy and this holds a special fascination for you, by all means do this. The interpretative signs there are good, to help you understand what you are looking at. Otherwise, this might be too long of a day trip from Istanbul to be enjoyable for you. That being said, the bus was comfortable and the provided lunch was very good. Overall a great day for us.
We both felt very disappointed in our guide. There was a 5-hour bus tour each way, where he could have told us about the countryside, the crops, the geography, etc. When we drove through Gallipoli, he spent about 30 seconds on World War i. At Troy, he fumbled with his papers and basically read what was on the signs but did not give us much time to stay at each station. I think we would have had a better trip if we had rented a car and done everything ourselves.
