We had a limited time in Japan, but seeing the snow monkeys was something we wanted to make time for. It made for a long day since we came from Tokyo, but we're so glad we went! We loved being outside we went in Feb and had fleece-lined pants, winter coats, snow boots, and hand-warmer packets, which was a nice change of pace from Tokyo. We researched a number of similar tours, but chose this one because visiting the monkeys were scheduled in the morning. The morning definitely had fewer people then compared to when we left. The baby macaques were adorable! The lunch was delicious. We stopped by a fruit market/grocery store and were able to buy a number of treats to take back for our families. The Zenko-ji Temple complex was beautiful. We loved our guide, Peter, he was very informative throughout the tour but not pushy. This tour was fantastic and we highly recommend it. And our friends and family love the pictures!
First we went to see the show monkey, and have shoes that not slip on ice or dirty ice. The monkey did not take a bath when I was there, but get some good pictures anyway. After that lunch at a ryokan that tastes very good., Then take bus and train to Nagano where we visited a famous Buddhist temple where our guide telling us many interesting things. And don't forget to go down in the labyrinth, and trying find the door to enlightenment. After that probably with a little tired feet it's time to go to the last event, sake tasting, there are both alcohol and non alcoholic, so everyone can taste.
Very good day. It was certainly worth it to see the snow monkeys and visit the Temple. I thought the temple visit was a throw-in but ended up being more than I expected. If you go in the winter you only Need to visit one days as the monkeys are always there at that time because of the temperatue of the hot springs.
This tour was an easy day trip from Tokyo and a fantastic introduction to the Nagano area! The sites were fun, interesting, and inspiring, the multi-course lunch was delicious, and we were entertained all the while by our knowledgeable and charismatic guide, Fred. Highly recommend!
This was an amazing tour, especially our tour guide Peter. Peter is an engaging tour guide and he made sure we had an entertaining and safe tour. The view going up to see the snow monkey was breathtaking and it was amazing how the snow monkeys continue their activities despite human presence. The lunch served in authentic Japanese traditional house enhance the Japanese cuisine served.
The temple tour was interesting and informative with Peter providing nice tidbits to enhance the tour. Tour was nicely capped off with sake and Japanese traditional condiments.
Highly recommend for those who enjoy nature and want a great guide to enhance the tour.
We had a very enjoyable time. Transport and meal were excellent and the guide extremely knowledgeable.
This tour was the best tour we did in Japan. Easy train connection from Tokyo to Nagano and our guide was fantastic.
Snow Monkeys was awesome! Fantastic Japanese lunch in a beautiful old Japanese building, our guide was very knowledgeable
about the Zenko-ji Temple and some Sake tasting to top it off. Perfect tour to do in Japan.
We met our guide, Lee, at the Nagano JR station and travelled on the Snow Monkey train to a small town near the park. We were then driven up the mountain to the base. A 1.8 km walk followed and soon we were in the Snow Monkey Park. It was magical and everything we expected and more. It had snowed just 2 days before, so lots of the monkeys were bathing in the hot springs. There were lots of babies and we even saw one nursing. We spent about an hour there and then returned to the base and had lunch. Very good. Then back on the train and off to Zenko-Ji temple. After viewing the temple we finished with Sake tasting. Loved the plum sake the best. All in all, a really educational day, but also fun.
Visiting the Snow Monkeys, was a delight. I met my guide Peter at Nagano station information board very easy to find and with just two other guest, Chris and Jamie, the visit soon became a trip with friends. We were driven to the station, Where we boarded the train for an hours journey to the Snow Monkeys park. On arrival at the park after checking everything in order we set of for a thirty minute walk up hill through the forest where the snow monkeys are. Early winter and the walk was a not too challenging and the views were wonderful. While we walked Peter provided us with many interesting facts about the park and the Monkeys. The monkeys are very use to humans and come very close without much regard for the human intruders. If you can take this trip you won't be disappointed...
Our tour guide met us at the station as planned. He took us to a small town first as the snow monkeys had not come to the onsen. This was truly amazing giving us an insight into a very old city with the public baths filled with natural hot spring water. We soaked our feet in a small foot bath. We were picked up and taken to the entrance of the park with the snow monkeys. Even though there still was no sign of the monkeys, we set off on a delightful walk through a forest of tall cedars towards the onsen. The monkeys had not been for three days which was quite unusual according to the rangers. We did not see them but were told they came late in the afternoon after we had left. This did not bother us as we had enjoyed the walk in the forest and the lunch provided at a cafe at the entrance to the park. The tour of the temple was very good and the sake tasting topped off a very full day tour.
