The trip was beautiful, despite being cloudy and cool. My meal was wonderful and traveling companions on the cruise were friendly. My only criticism is there was almost no commentary on what we were seeing, so I was disappointed not to learn about the history of the region. All in all, it was worthwhile.
The train and boat trip were great however you can do it all by yourself. The girl merely gave us tickets for the train when in fact she had time to tell us all about the beautiful train station. Then she merely told us where to sit for the great lunch. You can do this all without her help for sure. The meal was three courses with wine. The sights are wonderful.
Good tour to enjoy the river. It was hard to understand the tour guide and all guides speak more than one language, so they will repeat the same thing 3 times which is not good for us because there are a lot to see and we missed a lot of things because they say it 3 times and not enough time to explain everything you see. Most of tours in Portugal like that.
I was confused about how best to see the Duoro, but decided on this trip because of the reviews and ratings. I was largely disappointed by the tour, although I suppose it is as described. We met at the train station at 8am, took the train from 8:25am to 10:15am, walked directly from the train to the boat 10 mins, and then was on the boat from 10:45am to 5:15pm. The views are nice for sure. However, it gets old very fast. 2 hours on a train and 6.5 hours on a boat was just too much. I was there with my toddler, husband and my parents. Maybe this would have been better for older people.
The food was fine potato soup, pork and potatoes and cheesecake still slightly frozen. At the end, I saw a waiter carrying stacks of clean plates by balancing on his chin. That was after I ate, so didnt matter much to me. Still gross.
The bathrooms were clean. The boat is nice. The entire first floor is set up with the tables and chairs but you can stand upstairs although there is no shade or enclosures upstairs.
I found this wasnt worth devoting a whole day and it wasnt worth the 100. I would recommend finding a different way to see the Duoro.
We made the reservations through Viator. A company called Barcadouro called the day before to confirm where and what time we should meet. The tour begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Sao Bento Train Station. The train ride to Ragua was scenic and interesting. We were given an hour to walk around, get something to eat, and then we boarded the boat ride back to Porto which was a leisurely 6 hour cruise downstream. The ride on the barge included a nice, leisurely lunch with a bottle of wine per couple. You can ask for beer if not a wine drinker. The photo ops and vistas off the barge were the best.
Booking process - easy
Vendor comms - very good, detailed email with instructions came following booking and the tour company rang me the day before to reconfirm.
Meeting place / time - exactly as agreed.
Train trip -comfortable and interesting
Boat trip-excellent, great views of the Douro Valley. Meal was fine but dont expect choice or haute cuisine or fine wines. Veg soup and roll followed by pork slices, boiled potatoes, rice and veg. Desert was a cake containing chocolate and ice cream. A bottle of red wine, water and orange squash was provided per couple.
On board bar - quite good, reasonable selection and inexpensive?
Tour personnel - helpful and polite and friendly.
An excellent trip and well organized, a lovely cruise down the river. The only thing I would change is lunch served maybe an hour later. Lunch was served straightway as we passed the vineyards so missed not being on deck able to take in the views.
