Had an amazing view of the northern lights! The tour guide also was informative and engaging. It was really fun. I usually eschew guided tours because I prefer having the flexibility to explore but this is a must if in Reykjavik. The one thing I would recommend is getting to the boat really, really early - all of the warm suits were long gone by the time we boarded and we were early as it is.
This was an amazing excursion. We say the lights on the last night of our time in Iceland. It was cold and windy as the dickens but the captain and crew did a great job of finding protected spots to linger so we could take in the amazing sight of the northern lights over Reykjavik. The crew made the extra effort of taking photographs and collecting emails so all were able to have pictures from the excursion. Highly recommended but, of course, seeing the lights always depends on the weather.
Amazing views! Great tour guide! Beautiful way to chase the lights. We enjoyed it even when I thought we wouldn't see the lights -- thankfully we caught a glimpse at the very end of the trip. The crew even extended the cruise time as the lights appeared right as we were heading back to the harbor. Wonderful time!
The great news is that we were able to see the Northern Lights. The bad news is that the sea was EXTREMELY choppy and people were falling down left and right as well as about half the passengers vomiting. We saw the lights, but were not able to enjoy them at all. It was a very unsafe environment with people falling down everywhere. Once the guide announced he could see action, people moved outside falling over each other and once you got outside it was not easy getting to the side of the boat to actually see the lights as there was a gap between the wall and the side railing s and it was not possible to walk without holding on for dear life. People formed a human chain to get others to the edge. Honestly, I'm quite surprised that no one fell overboard. In all fairness, we were told before we boarded that the seas would be choppy and that we could be rescheduled for another night, but when you are there for a limited time, it isn't an option. They also said seasickness tablets were available. I wish they would have notified us earlier in the day that the ride would be very choppy and given the option to switch to a bus tour instead.
I went to bus stop 4 where I was told the bus would be between 8 and 8:30. I got there at 7:45. I walked up and down the block and first not sure where to go, keeping my eyes open for the bus. Then I found the stop at about 7:55pm and waited and waited. After checking in with multiple other bus drivers, at about 8:57pm, someone told me that the boat drop off was only a few blocks from where I waited, so I'd better run there and hurry. My boyfriend who I texted actually called the company to ask them to wait, but I didn't know that. I was running from bus stop 4 to the dock, not sure how far the boat would be. I arrived at 9:02. The tour was just about to leave and I was on the verge of tears, but I made it. Once on the boat, I tried to relax. I was disappointed by the speaker's dull, lifeless and low tone--I could barely hear what he was saying, so I still don't know how the northern lights are formed. There were some lights, but they were dim, and I was very cold, partially from having left my hotel at 7:30. While there was about 5 minutes on the tour while the lights began to move, and I got excited, I realized I paid a lot of money for those few minutes. I felt disappointed. The lights were pretty for a moment, and I know the company can't control that, but overall, I think that perhaps they could've taken us to a location with better visibility. I hope my other tours work out more smoothly.
This was an amazing tour for my first night in Iceland! I travelled alone - with no plans. I booked this tour the same day I arrived, after checking out the Aurora Borealis forecast. I recommend booking this trip early in your vacation, because if you do not see the northern lights on your first try, the company will let you return for a second trip.
Even if you do not see the lights on your first round, you get wonderful views of Reykjavik at night, and as you get further from the city lights, a beautiful view of the constellations.
They provide you a warm suit - definitely take it because it gets much colder on the water. Drinks and snacks available.
Out tour guide and the crew were receptive and informative. I love the passion they have for the lights - even though they do this all the time, they seemed genuinely excited to see the lights again! And, we got to learn the science.
It was a great tour to take as a woman alone in the city - book it and book it early in your trip!
