Washington’s home was awesome. The guide (Charles Smith?) was hilarious and extremely knowledgeable. It’s amazing how when someone loves their work, it is contagious. This guy’s enthusiasm was more contagious than a cold. He was also hoping that Oprah Winfrey would marry him. He should be acting in Hollywood. Great job!
Overall, my wife and I really enjoyed our trip to Mount Vernon and I'd like to rate it a 5; however, due to the lack of directions on how to get to the bus the rating is a 4. Prior to our trip, I read many reviews on the Viator and TripAdvisor websites and a common theme throughout was how difficult it was to find the place where you meet the bus. Here are some directions that may help you find your destination to begin your tour. We took the Metro and got off at the L'Enfant Plaza Station. We exited the station at Maryland and 7th St SW. and walked south on 7th St. to D St SW. We crossed D, turned right on D St., and walked east for a couple blocks. We continue walking past a 395 North sign and walked a half block to a building addressed 955 L'Enfant Plaza North. We turned left, walked up the stairs, entered the building and found the food court. Because the stairs going up were closed off the day of our tour, we took the elevator located near a Philly Cheese Steak up to the next level. We went outside walked east and located the DC Trails stand and they told us where the bus would pick us up. Essentially, it's on a road that's above a road. Instead of figuring out the directions myself, DC Trails should provide their customers with detailed directions describing how to get to where you meet the bus. Once we successfully navigated to our bus, we ended up being the only two people on the tour probably because of the heavy rain that fell throughout the day. Our driver, Mr. Robert, was very pleasant and did a good job describing the historical sights as we drove to Mount Vernon. My wife and I especially enjoyed stopping at Christ Church in Alexandria. Once we arrived at the estate, Mr. Robert bought tickets for the tour of the house and told us when and where to meet him for the ride back. We enjoyed everything Mount Vernon offered including the house, out buildings, museums, gift shops, the grounds, and the restaurant. As a bonus, Mr. Robert dropped us off at our hotel so we didn't have to take the Metro. Again, my wife and I really enjoyed our day trip to Mount Vernon but it would have been better to receive some directions prior to our tour date.
We are still talking about this tour. Charles clearly loves his job and history and takes pride in teaching others. I hope his boss realizes that truly, he makes the tour. We did this our first day in DC and it was amazing how we knew more about other monuments and museums throughout the week because of what Charles explained! Thank you CHARLES!
We really enjoyed this trip to Mount Vernon. It was a good way to get there without a lot of expense. We had plenty of time to see everything and have a snack at the restaurant as well. The driver gave very clear instructions and everyone was back at the bus on time. I would recommend this option for traveling to Mt Vernon from Washington DC.
Wonderful tour with our 13 and 12 year old grandchildren. Perfect amount of time at Mount Vernon site and added bonus of stopping at Christ Church in Alexandria. Would highly recommend with or without children. Nicely done.
The tour guide Charles was great. He was extremely knowledgeable, funny and accommodating. Mount Vernon was a wonderful tour site. Charles gave us "spot on" information about the site and encouragement on the special things to look for and the best dishes in the restaurant. The total experience was great.
